"Get A Room"
Original Xanga entry ↗A comment shouted across the train cabin by Anonymous Train Boy left me wondering.
Was heading home with Irene after watching "P.S I Love You" (Very touching movie btw. I should blog about it, but for now, let's just say I laughed and cried throughout the movie, while Irene fell asleep next to me... Bad Bunny!) We were in the part of the train where it connects 2 cabins. I was leaning against the wall and she was standing in front of me, her arms around me. We were talking, laughing and sharing the occasional kiss. Then the comment came. Irene didn't hear it and was oblivious to the stares of the other people on the train. I was fighting the urge to hunt down Anonymous Train Boy and give him a piece of my mind.
Is there less tolerance simply because we're a gay couple? Would we face the same if we were a straight couple or even the common "butch-femme" stereotype couple?
I've often taken buses and trains and seen how PDA can be annoying. Perhaps I am bias as we are the subject matter now, but we were just 2 happy people smiling to each other, enjoying the glow of having had a good date on Yuan Xiao Jie (Yes, I'm sorry I forgot and wanted to bring you underwear shopping. How totally unromantic of me
) and generally having a good time. I refuse to apologise if our kiss(es) offended you. I refuse to "Get A Room". I have one already, thank you very much and I happen to like it alot.
Sex in public places can be offensive.
Disgustingly groping and almost undressing your partner in public can be offensive.
Showing genuine love and affection is not offensive and I refuse to allow anyone to make it so.
So Anonymous Train Boy, next time you see us sharing a kiss and are tempted to yell "Get A Room", don't bother. I don't care what you think, neither does Irene. There is a good chance we may even come up to you and tell you how MUCH we don't care about what you think.
Or we could just stalk you, hunt you down and kill you.

Non-explicit pda only bothers people who are jealous due to their lack of ability to have their own "a".
I mean seriously.. whats more offensive? People who are discreetly, if a bit publicly, showing a bit of affection; or people who are publicly chastising of anything (not just pda). If you think about it, it's pretty much the same thing in how it is something put forth to a public audience. However one is a personal one on one thing given out of affection and given to a willing participant. The other is something given out of spite to someone who would rather not hear it. Both are put forth on a public platform for judgement.
In the end i'd rather see two hot chicks making out as opposed to watch one uppity person trying to publically point out their misguided outrage. Bear in mind this is coming from someone who is jealous of all affection both private and public, and I am being a hypocrite by voicing 'my own' oppinion on your semi-public forum of a blog

I used to think that I am not into PDA, but now I am. =p
I am seriously not sure whether I would have been more discreet about it if I were straight. I have this little defiant side of me that goes, "Gay people exist, get over it."
I love the affectionate moments we share.
And no, I have no desire to hunt Anonymous Train Boy down.

Eek, so violent. Forgive, forgive.
Sigh, this silly world.
rainbowdance · 2/22/2008 9:52 PM
Thats so despicable. To utter something and hide into the crowds.
But Gah, you are scary Liv. At least A.T.B had a tinge of wisdom to stay annoymous.

Bo-chup! Such people are such a waste of our time. Not as if we are displaying nudity.

thats the typical ignorant singaporean for you.
i personally don't think it is PDA that irks those ignoranuses but the idea of homosexuality which undermines the average heterosexual person because:
A - they can't get any.
B - same sex relationships = less chances of them getting any
C - they are fearful of being not mainstream.
D - They are closet homosexuals who are very VERY afraid to come out because of point C(parents and society and friends not accepting their orientation)
*cough*
that said, after taking "gender and culture studies" as an elective really made me a better person
anyways,
if anyone gives u any more shit abt PDA/having same sex orientation...
you can always tell them "you're just jealous cus you're not getting any of this." , give irene a big fat kiss and then give said idiot a big shiny smile.
might as well enjoy the experience instead of brooding/getting annoyed over it.

If you look at this objectively, it could be that ATB was shouting at you to get a room because of the PDA and not necessarily about the gay couple thingy.Could also be because the person felt that his personal space was somehow being "violated". The problem is that you never know what people are thinking - so you may as well just forget about it.
To be honest, I have been on the giving and receiving end of "Get a room!!" hahaha...and when on the receiving end, I'd rather someone yelled at me to get a room than pass some explicit, obscene and derogatory comment about how "you girls just need a guy now to complete the show". Oh yes, it does happen here too - there are people thick skinned enough to make pornographic comments that completely destroy the sweet moment of PDA with your loved one.
So if you think about it, "get a room" ain't so bad after all.
jessliv · 2/28/2008 11:17 AM
My problem with it is not so much their comments. I mean, I've been on the giving end of "Get a room!" as well. However, I have to state that we weren't exactly making out but were just sharing a sweet moment.
PLUS there was another incident on the train where this entire family were just staring at us while we were holding hands and had our groceries at our feet.
Anyway, it just made an impression on me because I didn't used to face this with my ex. So yeah... different mentality when its 2 girls who aren't obviously conforming to the butch-femme stereotype?
HMoody · 2/29/2008 3:45 AM
I think - you shouldn't care so much about people staring. They want to stare, let them stare, cos that's about all they can do.I've had people stare even when i was with my butch ex-gf (ah maybe they thought I was an ugly freak of nature, who knows? haha..). The main point is not to care. People like to look at (even stare) at others that are somewhat different from them. Generally this is called ignorance. (if i got 10 cents for everytime people stared at me and my exes as well as my current gf, I'd be filthy rich today.)
So just get used to the ignoramus population in Singapore, and stop caring!! (and don't deny this, otherwise you wouldn't be trying to figure out WHAT they're thinking when they see you two.)

was ur ex into PDA? are u saying that u never had weird looks when u were out with your ex?
dont u think that it was cos ur expression of PDA may have been too exhibitionistic? you dont have to show the whole world how in love you are. maybe that is why atb shouted wat he did?
anyway, since u dont even care abt what ur mother thinks or feels, then it is right to simply say you dont care about anything at all as LOVE is the most important thing to u right now. u can survive on just love alone, so why even bother with what atb shouted, if u dont even bother with ur own mother?
jessliv · 3/2/2008 11:18 AM
I love my mother very much and have done plenty over the years to show her how much I love her.
I do not think that it is necessary for me to defend myself on my own blog as I very much believe that my mother knows how much I love her. Deep down in her heart, she knows how I have defended her, sacrificed for her and done my duty as her daughter.
At this moment, she may feel that I do not care and that I do not love her, but that is not true. I am going through a life - changing crisis right now and it is one where I am unable to share with her.
As someone who is not aware of the situation, I would advise you not to judge. And honestly, even if you do, I could really care less about what you think.
Love is not the most important thing to me right now. My own personal well being is at the top of my list. If I cannot secure mental and physical well being for myself, I am unable to provide anything for the people that I love. I have to take my own journey of self healing and only at the end of this journey will I be able to accomplish more in my life and provide for others. Without that, no matter how much I try, I will still fail.
So the next time you post a comment on a stranger's blog, try to keep in mind that you don't have the full story and don't be so quick to judge. You may never know when you are the one being judged in the future.
