Seperation During Recession
Original Xanga entry ↗When a couple fights alot, sometimes the best course of action is temporary separation. That is what happened to Mango and Chipmunk after I noticed them fighting regularly for the past 2 weeks. I decided to separate them.
Basically, since Mango has been the big bully, I bought him a new 2 storey terrace house called the Little Princess - Dream House of Hamsters. The new house comes with a cozy sleeping area, an exercise wheel and a fun slide. Chipmunk gets to keep the 2 storey bungalow that comes complete with 2 feeding areas, ladder tube and exercise ball. I think Mango got the raw end of the bargain since I couldn't afford to buy yet another big bungalow, with the recession and all going on.

"Dream House of Hamsters" - I wonder if Mango has been dreaming of the Little Princess or Little Prince house. Too bad, he doesn't have a choice now.

Are they both male? The first thing to note is that males are territorial. Read up on pet books and such. The first to understand is that males when young still may treat each other brotherly especially when they come from the same batch. But at the matured age, both become territorial and would start fighting for their space. Please do not keep males together especially if cage size is small.
Males can only be kept together when the cage is large enough for 2 hamsters to establish their territory. Even with large cage, a risk is still there as one might tend to venture into another's space due to placement of food/wheel/water. Also if the cage is not washed regularly, the scent remains and the hamsters might even try extending. Over a long period, if the scent stays and a dominion has become obvious, even after that placing 2 together is impossible as 1 has established priority and another submissive. Your cage is generally too small for 2 males to stay together. Even females have the tendency to start fighting together.
When 2 have been seperated NEVER put them together again as they will not remember each other and the territorial fight will happen all over again. You will only endanger the life of the submissive or both hamsters. Please be careful when handling animals, do read up more through the internet or pet books when handling them. A basic rule for all pet owners.
